Manchester United have been dealt another blow after captain Nemanja Vidic might be forced to spend some time on the bench after developing a knee injury.

The centre-back was in an accident with FC Basel’s Marco Streller in the first half of the 2 – 1 defeat to the Swiss side, which saw him carried off the pitch with serious knee pain after twisting the joint. He later left the ground on crutches.

The extent of his injury hasn’t yet been verified, but United manager Sir Alex Ferguson stated: “We don’t know with Vidic, we think it’s certainly a medial ligament [injury].”

The injury took place during a deflating evening for the Reds which not only saw them lose the game but also lose their spot in the Champions League. United’s local rivals Manchester City were also knocked out of the competition and both teams will play in the Europa League instead

If Vidic is found to have injured his knee ligament, the Serbian ace may be out for up to four months.
